Of course, the visionaries, engineers and architects at various levels of Google haven't been taken by surprise. I erred by discounting Google while TheStreet's Anton Wahlman was busy putting the pieces together.

Apple to $1,000 and beyond predictions didn't pan out. But that doesn't mean GOOG will not reach that level. In fact, $1,000 might be a conservative target for this stock.

People are willing to pay for something of quality that they know will give them a lot in return. It's no longer a case where it's a race to the bottom to create the cheapest and most easily-produced product. People are realizing that you frequently get what you pay for.

-- Eric Kuhn, The Wall Street Journal
NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- That's an excellent excerpt from an excellent article that reveals where so many otherwise excellent people miss with errant emotional reactions to Apple over the last several weeks. If these folks credit Google with any perceived weakness at Apple, they're really far gone.

Anton Wahlman writes solid articles for TheStreet. I don't agree with him very often, but that doesn't mean his work isn't strong. We just don't see eye-to-eye on much.

Ford's Model T brought
assembly-line mass production. Volkswagen's Beetle brought the automobile to the masses starting around World War II. The 1982 Audi 100 brought the modern aerodynamic design.

In the last couple of years, however, electrification of the
automobile has accelerated the change we have seen in the industry.
This electrification comes in many stages and variants, from pure
electric cars to those with only mild electric assistance to a
gasoline engine.

The 2011 car of the year was the Chevrolet Volt. It is a
zero-compromise car where full power is available using any
combination of electricity and gasoline. The first 38 miles are on
electricity, and after that, a 9-gallon gasoline tank takes you another
340 miles. The price is around $40,000. (Chevrolet is a unit of GM .)

Lutz, a conservative himself, blasted "the political extreme right" for "distorting the facts of the Volt." For example, he notes that it was the Bush administration, not the Obama administration that approved the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric vehicles. According to Lutz, they "trash an outstanding American product the Volt and do damage to American employment just to get at Obama."

I will not get into the merits of electric vehicles; others more than ably fill that role. Instead, I focus on Lutz's comments as they pertain to the stock market and its broader implications.
