NEW YORK -- Dell posted earnings on Thursday that came in below analysts' forecasts but the PC maker's revenue topped estimates.

Dell's Enterprise Solutions group booked a solid increase in revenue during the quarter, while hardware sales were dismal.

The company posted adjusted earnings of 21 cents a share, falling short of analysts' estimates of 35 cents a share. Dell reported first-quarter revenue of $14.1 billion, a 2% decrease from the prior year, but higher than consensus expectations of $13.5 billion. ...

NEW YORK -- Elan and Theravance reached a $1 billion agreement in which Elan will buy 21% of royalties that Theravance receives from GlaxoSmithKline for four respiratory drugs.

The deal includes Breo Ellipta, a new treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease that received approval from the Food and Drug Administration last week.

NEW YORK -- Carl Icahn and Southeastern Asset Management proposed an alternative offer to a $24.4 billion deal to buy out Dell's public stockholders, The Wall Street Journal reported.

Icahn and Southeastern, in a letter to Dell's board, said they propose giving Dell shareholders the option to keep holding stock in the company, and take an additional $12 a share in cash or stock, the Journal reported.

The proposal is part of a campaign to upend a buyout effort from Dell founder Michael Dell and private-equity firm Silver Lake Partners. Mr. Dell and Silver Lake reached an agreement in February to buy out shareholders at $13.65 a share. Icahn and Southeastern, who together hold 13% of Dell's stock, said the PC maker is selling out too cheaply to Mr. Dell and Silver Lake, the newspaper reported. ...

NEW YORK -- News Corp. posted first-quarter earnings that beat analysts' estimates on double-digit increases for subscriber fees at its cable networks, including Fox News Channel.

News Corp. reported on Wednesday adjusted earnings per share of 36 cents for the quarter ended in March, beating analysts' estimates of 35 cents a share. Sales increased 14% to $9.5 billion, also beating estimates of $9.2 billion.

Fees that News Corp. charges pay-TV providers to carry programming such as "American Idol" as well as sporting events increased 11% for the company's U.S. properties and 42% among international channels. Advertising revenue at the domestic cable channels grew 2% in the quarter from the same period a year ago. ...

NEW YORK -- Walt Disney's sales and profits for the three months ended March 31 beat analysts' forecasts as the world's largest entertainment company posted growth at its television networks, film studios and amusement parks.

Disney, the owner of ESPN and ABC, said Tuesday that fiscal second-quarter sales were $10.55 billion, topping estimates of $10.48 billion.

Revenue at Disney's amusement parks and resorts grew 14% to $3.3 billion. ...
