&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;After falling for much of the morning, gold for April delivery was headed higher, up $10.70 to $1,709.40 an ounce at the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The gold price traded as high as $1,712.50 and as low as $1,677 an ounce, while the spot price was adding $9.60, according to Kitco's gold index.

&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Single-family home sales rose 1.6% to an adjusted annual rate of 315,000 from a revised 310,000 in October. Economists expected new-home sales to rise to 313,000 from an originally reported 307,000.

&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;The average sales price of new homes was $242,900, and there is a six month supply of new homes available at current sales rates.

&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Orders for long-lasting U.S. goods rose 3.8% in November, better than the 2% expected. Orders for transportation equipment helped total orders rise the most since July. The read on the prior month's orders, however, was downwardly revised to no growth. Excluding cars, orders rose 0.3% in November adding to an upwardly revised 1.5% in October. Economists had forecast a rise to 0.5%.

&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;In a separate report, personal income and spending in November both edged up 0.1%, disappointing estimates. The consensus was for incomes to rise by 0.2% and spending to rise by 0.3%. In the prior month, incomes tacked on 0.4%.

&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Initial jobless claims dropped 4,000 to 364,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis in the week ended Dec. 17 from a revised 368,000 in the previous week. 

&lt;/P&gt;&lt;P&gt;Economists expected to see claims rise to 375,000 from an originally reported 366,000, according to Thomson Reuters.
