The presumed ouster of CEO Leo Apotheker and the apparent appointment of former EBay chief Meg Whitman is just the latest chapter in this saga.

The potential exit of Apotheker, after a one-year run of financial disappointments capped off by a stunning breakup plan, has led analysts and investors to create a list of dream candidates to take over the top HP job.

Should the Whitman gambit not work out, a few names of outside talent have popped up as the sort of steady hands that could take the wheel and avert disaster.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Wall Street isn't the only place where HP chief Leo Apotheker is unwelcome.

After nearly a year on the job that was marked by a 40% stock slide, months of inaction, sales shortfalls and finally a stunning call for the breakup of the company, HP's board of directors is considering showing Apotheker the door, according to Bloomberg.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) - Without a new Apple iPhone yet this year, Google has enjoyed a strong run with its Android phones.

Not only is the new iPhone late, it will arrive this fall (presumably), a little light under the hood compared to some of the growing list of beefy dual-core, LTE 4G Androids out already or soon to arrive.

And while fessing up to blunders is a rare but somewhat welcome move, it seems like a good time to look at other goofs in tech that might be worthy of an apology.

Netflix' eagerness to not get bogged down in its costly, aging mail-order DVD business while pursuing the cloud-based venture of video streaming is understandable. But the transition has been as jarring to consumers as it has been to investors.

The margin guidance came midway through a presentation by CFO Frank Calderoni during the company's annual analyst day.

Cisco's margins have been in focus as the networking giant struggles to cut costs as sales slow and pricing gets more competitive. Analysts had been expecting gross margins to narrow from the 63% level in fiscal 2011 with some on Wall Street targeting gross margins of 60.7% in 2012.
