(Updated to reflect $6.3 million raised in 2009 offerings)

LEE, Mass. (TheStreet) -- Wave Systems' stock has surged 730% over the past year, evidence it has its fair share of believers it is poised to dominate the emerging hardware-based digital-security space with a very large addressable market.

But to sway bearish investors expecting a break down in share price, Wave Systems first needs to bury its history as a serial stock issuer. To accomplish this, it is evangelizing the technology to make consumers and corporations understand that built-in digital security is available at a flick of a switch and that it offers a cheaper, better performance than that of software-based security solutions.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- United Technologies has raised its first quarter dividend by 10.4% to 42.5 cents per common share.

"This dividend increase demonstrates our confidence in UTC's financial strength and in our ability to continue to deliver outstanding performance in 2010 and beyond," United Technologies' chief, Louis Chenevert said.

The company claims to be stronger than a year ago as a result of structural cost reduction, effective cash redeployment and portfolio transformation.

REDMOND, Wash. (TheStreet) -- Despite beating Wall Street estimates in its fourth-quarter earnings report released Thursday, Microsoft was the Dow's biggest decliner on Friday. Shares closed at $28.18, down 3.36%.

After a big holiday season consumer lift, Microsoft's next sales boost from the business sector looks a long way off.

Microsoft ripped through fiscal second-quarter sales targets by riding a massive wave of Windows 7-powered PC purchases at the end of last year, the software giant reported Thursday.

One of the reasons why Apple's stock was relatively flat after hours Monday was because Wall Street didn't know what to do with the GAAP accounting change. Too many analysts who should have been ready to interpret the data for their clients were left dumbfounded by the huge earnings beat.

Apple begins the day Tuesday with its lowest price-to-earnings ratio in years and as revised 2010 estimates come in, the company will have its lowest forward P/E of the Steve Jobs era. This disconnect won't last long. Over the next year, traders will price Apple stock back up towards its historical norm of a 32.7 P/E.

SANTA ANA, Calif. (TheStreet) -- STEC appears to have had a phenomenal 2009, when its shares almost tripled and its revenue climbed an estimated 54%. In contrast, the Russell 2000, a small-cap index, gained 27% and revenues were down among tech companies, including IBM and Hewlett-Packard.

But everything was not rosy for Santa Ana, Calif.-based STEC.

The shares climbed almost ninefold to $41 by Sept. 10, before falling to $12 and losing more than $1.5 billion in market cap by December. The stock has rebounded, but investors are still scratching their heads and wondering what the heck is going on.

Apple reportedly is inviting reporters to an event in San Francisco on Jan. 27 amid speculation that it's preparing to unveil a tablet computing device.

An Apple representative declined to comment, according to the report.

ROUND ROCK, Texas (TheStreet) -- PC makers had a surprisingly strong fourth quarter. Not so surprisingly, Dell did not.

For four of the top five PC makers, price cuts, the new Microsoft Windows 7 operating system and growing demand in China all contributed to a blowout quarter, said analysts. The magnitude of strength in PC sales last quarter was the real surprise, UBS analysts wrote in a research note Thursday.

Hewlett-Packard expanded its lead as the top shop by adding more than a percentage point of the market to its share. And Acer surged to the No. 2 slot mostly because of the popularity of its laptops.

ARLINGTON, Va. (TheStreet) -- ICx Technologies, one of the security technology stocks that soared the week after the Christmas holiday as a result of the attempted airline bombing, was the biggest gainer on Friday in the recently hot anti-terror stock category.

President Obama made it clear on Friday morning, in a press conference about the attempted bombing by the Nigerian terrorist, that the pressure is on the heads of his intelligence agencies to improve airport screening and other security measures. Janet Napolitano, the head of Homeland Security, spoke after President Obama's remarks and said it was premature to say how much the federal government would spend on airport security measures.

Shares of ICx ended Friday up 10.7%, for a gain of 87 cents to $8.97. While the one-day spike was notable, ICx is actually much lower than the 52-week high it hit the week after Christmas. And heavy selling earlier in the week kept its Friday gain from eclipsing the ICx level shares began trading at on Monday morning.

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, ICx experienced two consecutive days of more than 4 million shares traded, and closed below $8 on both days. ICx shares didn't rise above the $8 mark until Thursday. ICx shares' Friday volume of 3.3 million was well above its 1.1 million average, but still trailed the heavy trading at the beginning of the week.

BOSTON (TheStreet) -- As Google announced more than a week ago that it was developing a smart phone to compete with offerings from Apple, Palm, Research in Motion and Motorola, some of which run Google's own Android operating system, annoying phrases like "game-changer" were bandied about.

Along with news about the hardware from Google, called the Nexus One, came rampant speculation about funky new models for how the phones will interact with service providers. Some theorized that the phone could use VoIP technology (voice over Internet protocol) to bypass the need for cell-phone service. Others said they could maybe be unlocked from the get-go, allowing users to pick whichever network they choose.

Despite the thrill and speculation in the tech community, Google's stock price has failed to get a lift. Investors are waiting for the details.
