PALO ALTO, Calif. (TheStreet) -- Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is in no hurry to take his company public even as everyone in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street awaits the initial public offering of the social-networking site.

"We're going to go public eventually, because that's the contract that we have with our investors and our employees," Zuckerberg told the Wall Street Journal in an interview. But, he added, "We are definitely in no rush."

Unlike some of his predecessors such as Apple CEO Steve Jobs and Google's founders, Zuckerberg doesn't need huge cash reserves to build factories, a global distribution system or even a massive marketing machine, the Journal notes.

On an adjusted basis, however, earnings of 31 cents a share were below the 36 cents a share analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were expecting.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (TheStreet) -- European antitrust authorities have opened a preliminary probe into complaints by three European Internet companies about Google's tactics of lowering their rank in search results that appear on Google sites, Google revealed.

Julia Holtz, Google's senior competition counsel, wrote in a blog post that the EU has received complaints from a U.K. price comparison site, Foundem, a French legal search engine called ejustice.fr and Microsoft's Ciao! from Bing.

Foundem argues that Google's algorithms demote their site in the search results because it is a vertical search engine and so a direct competitor to Google. Ciao! has complained about Google's standard terms and conditions.

Google will meet with Chinese officials in coming days, the Wall Street Journal reports, although the schedule and the status of the talks is unclear. Google policy executive, Ross LaJeunesse, is expected to be one of the Google officials handling the talks, said people familiar with the matter, the Journal reports.

But any resolution on whether Google can operate an unfiltered search engine in China is likely to be at least weeks away, said one of the people, the Journal adds.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Google's ire-provoking launch of Google Buzz highlights an eager intent to tap the search prospects in social networking.

Put aside the outing of private contacts and the involuntary public exposure of your fascinating profile -- Google's hasty introduction of Buzz is a desperate attempt to join in-the-know crowd.

Why is Google so desperate? One reason: Internet traffic patterns are changing rapidly. Twitter's growth is exploding and Facebook is like a sponge soaking up more and more user time.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (TheStreet) -- Yahoo! director Ron Burkle, the supermarket magnate, won't seek re-election to the Internet search company's board at the annual meeting later this year.

Burkle, who has been on Yahoo!'s board since November 2001, is stepping down "to devote more time to his other business interests," Yahoo! said in a press release.

Nearly 38% of Yahoo! shareholders opposed Burkle's re-election to the board in 2008, the Associated Press reports, blaming him in part for the mishandling of a $47.5 billion takeover bid from Microsoft.

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (TheStreet) -- Google is mulling further updates and considering changing the way it tests new Buzz features, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The number of people initially uncomfortable with the service underscored that the company's approach of testing Buzz among its employees hasn't been sufficient, Google product manager Todd Jackson told the Journal in an interview. Google might test new features with friends and family of Google employees.

"Getting feedback from 20,000 Googlers isn't quite the same as letting Gmail users play with Buzz in the wild," Jackson said. "We needed to launch to the public and get feedback from users."

Google's Gigabit experiment to build limited fiber optic networks capable of 100-times faster Internet speeds has a familiar, sunny, change-the-world sweep to it. Like many of Google's well-intended strategies, the announcement Wednesday is as much a challenge to naysayers as it is an internal goal for Googlers far and wide.

Fiber optic networks are clearly the domain of telco and cable giants like AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and Time Warner Cable. And the referees in this skirmish are regulators at the Federal Communications Commission.
