NEW YORK (Stockpickr) -- By the spring of 2012, investors had simply given up on natural gas stocks. After all, the energy source had crashed in value to just $2 per thousand cubic feet, a price at which almost every producer would lose money. It was pretty clear that the industry damage would deepen and that major players might eventually run out of cash, but then a funny thing happened. Gas prices began to rebound, and they kept on going, managing to double in value in just 12 months.

To be sure, it's unwise to assume that all of the recent price gains for natural gas will hold. At a current price of $4.25 per thousand cubic feet, you should assume a modest pullback, perhaps to the $4 range as the springtime weather reduces demand for gas.

NEW YORK (Stockpickr) -- If you a draw a straight line north from Texas to the Canadian border, you'll track a big splotch of red. That's the area where the U.S. is simply parched. Several years of subpar precipitation have led to increasingly arid growing conditions, and as of recently, the land was even more parched than it was a year ago. That means this summer's drought may be worse than the already brutal drought of 2012.
As an investor, you need to track the drought's implications. A range of companies will be clearly vulnerable to reduced spending by farmers, while other firms will actually stand to benefit.

The key is to focus on companies that have all the ingredients in place for a turnaround. These factors include a fresh management team, an intact customer base and the financial resources to fix the broken parts of a company's operation.

NEW YORK (Stockpickr) -- Nearly half a decade after a deep recession, the U.S. economy may finally be poised for a sustained upturn. Economists are now looking for GDP growth in the second half of 2013 to approach 3% or even exceed that level.

A firming economy can have a profound impact on a company's capital allocation strategies. If the economy can finally gain altitude, companies will be increasingly willing to part with all of the cash that has been piling up on balance sheets.

Hopes are rising that 2013 will be a better year for consumers, but we're not exactly on the cusp of a truly healthy consumer economy where all people feel a greater sense of financial well-being.

In corporate America, it's an entirely different story. By many measures, a wide range of companies are generating near-record profit margins, and cash continues to pile up on corporate balance sheets.

NEW YORK (Stockpickr) -- Economists think the U.S. economy is poised for its strongest year in half a decade in 2013, thanks in large part to a solid upturn in consumer spending. Why are they optimistic? Because household finances are finally in good shape.

According to the Federal Reserve, consumers now use 15.7% of their monthly take home pay on mortgages, car loans and other forms of debt. You'd have to go back 30 years to find such a low reading. That's the result of a steady pay down in consumer debt over the past half decade.

Investors have been gravitating towards high-yield stocks ever since interest rates plunged in 2008 and traditional fixed-income investments like bonds and CDs no longer offered much of a payout. The search for yield has largely been focused on U.S. companies, but the same interest rate/fixed-income dynamics have been playing out across the globe. Indeed some of the most impressive yield plays can be found in Europe, Latin America and Asia, and these dividend payers often trade here in the U.S. as well.

Here are five robust yield plays from outside of our borders that trade in the U.S. that can help your portfolio produce more income.

According to most economists, the hangover from the Great Recession of 2008 continues to linger, and the U.S. economy is unlikely to grow much more than 2.0% or 2.5% in 2013. And most American companies will be grateful if they can boost sales by just 5% or 7% in such a slow economy. Yet in every economic cycle, you'll still come across the select stocks and sectors that are powering up. Indeed a few dozen companies in the S&P 500 are set to boost sales in 2013 in excess of 20%.

Ever since the Great Recession of 2008 took root, the U.S. Government has done all in its power to boost the economy by keeping interest rates at historical lows. That's been a real help for borrowers as mortgages, corporate bonds and other forms of debt can be issued with low interest expenses. But it's been a nightmare for savers as they try to find high-quality investments that offer payouts robust enough to live on.

>>5 Stocks Warren Buffett Loves

Yet if you know where to look, you can find impressive income opportunities across the investing spectrum. Here are five companies -- outside of those two categories -- that sport dividend yields in excess of 5%. They are of fairly high quality, as Standard & Poors has selected them to be members of the S&P 500, S&P 400 (a mid-cap index) or the S&P 600 (a small-cap index).

NEW YORK (Stockpickr) -- Thanks to a strong upward move in recent months, gold prices are back up around $1,700 an ounce, not far from the $1,900 peak seen in the summer of 2011. For anyone who has owned gold since it traded for just $1,100 an ounce at the start of 2011, these have been happy times indeed.

The same can't be said for companies that mine gold. These miners have traded down from their highs on concerns that rising costs will crimp profits. Yet concerns about mining profits increasingly appear overblown.

NEW YORK (Stockpickr) -- When the U.S. economy has slipped into recession, the subsequent snapback is usually quite robust. Pent-up demand is unleashed, and it's not unusual to see the economy grow at a 3% or 4% pace after the recession ends.

Not this time. The U.S. economy seems to have never quite recovered from the recession of 2008 and 2009 and at times has even threatened to tip back into recession. The next few quarters should bring more of the same.

NEW YORK (Stockpickr) -- Unless you've been invested in Apple , you've probably lost money in most of your media-oriented investments. That's because the major networks, the record labels, the video game console makers and the live music promoters have all seen a slowdown in business as consumers spend more time on their iPhones, iPads and iPods.

Yet behind the scenes, there are a range of companies that aren't ready to concede "game over." They're adapting to new media consumption habits, figuring out ways to get consumers' attention, or at least help existing media companies win back lost mind share.
