HP's response to Ellison's comments has been added to this story.

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. (TheStreet) -- Oracle, which posted strong second-quarter results on Thursday, is rapidly gaining ground on HP and IBM in the high-end server market, according to CEO Larry Ellison.

The database giant comfortably beat Wall Street's second-quarter estimates after market close on Thursday, citing sales of new software licenses and database/middleware products. Hardware, however, dominated the conference call to discuss the results, with Ellison again using the Exadata database machine to take swipes at IBM and HP.

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. (TheStreet) -- Oracle reports its second-quarter results after market close Thursday, which TheStreet will be live-blogging at 4 p.m. ET.

Investors will be watching for news about Oracle's Exadata database machine, a prepackaged mix of hardware and software used for data-intensive projects like cloud computing and grids, or large clusters of servers and storage used in industries such as oil exploration.

Oracle has said Exadata is taking share from IBM and HP, and CEO Larry Ellison said he expects Exadata to pull in $1.5 billion in revenue for this fiscal year.

ROUND ROCK, Tex. (TheStreet) -- Dell's $876 million attempt to acquire Compellent may have sent the storage maker's shares into a tailspin, but could ultimately prove to be crucial to Dell's long-term enterprise strategy.

The two companies announced on Thursday that they are in advanced discussions about a possible merger, with Dell looking to pay $27.50 a share for the Eden Prairie, Minn.-based outfit.

Compellent's stock, however, plunged $4.61, or 13.70%, to $29.94 on Thursday. Dell shares rose a penny, or 0.08%, to reach $13.69, as the Nasdaq gained 0.03%.

PALO ALTO, Calif. (TheStreet) -- So enterprise customers can avoid the hassle of integrating gear from a range of different tech companies, Hewlett-Packard is planning to launch pre-packaged bundles of its hardware and software early next year to support key business apps, according to Dave Donatelli, group manager of the tech giant's Enterprise Storage & Servers (ESS) division.

"You're going to see us bringing out integrated appliances early in 2011 -- it makes it much easier for businesses to run applications," he said.

The HP server and storage chief explained that customers would much rather deploy their applications on dedicated kit from a single vendor, rather than deal with integration issues.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- A pair of new reports shows strong demand for smartphones and a heated five-way race among mobile phone software shops.

Nielsen's survey of U.S. phone owners, released Tuesday, showed that nearly 30% of wireless customers have purchased smartphones.

Thanks to strong sales of Apple's iPhone and Google Android phones worldwide, third-quarter smartphone sales rose 9% over second-quarter levels, according to a Morgan Stanley tally also released Tuesday.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Microsoft wants another try at TV.

Looking to join tech leaders Apple and Google, Microsoft is exploring a pay-TV deal with media companies to deliver programming to Xbox users, according to a Reuters report Monday.

While the service could take as long as a year to put together, the final product will no doubt be seen as yet another attack on the cable industry and the big-ticket TV programming packages. The Xbox game console makes for an easy entry for Microsoft since the device is already connected to the Internet and the TV.

BOSTON (TheStreet) -- Wall Street analysts are bullish on computer bellwethers Hewlett-Packard and Dell, but many of their biggest investors have been paring their stakes.

H-P, the world's largest maker of personal computers, saw 14 sellers and only six buyers among its 20 largest investors in the third quarter. Axa and Fidelity, among its top five investors, dumped a combined 26.4 million shares, according to Bloomberg data. In total, there was a net decline of 29.9 million shares of H-P owned by institutional and mutual fund investors in the third quarter.

Although Dell had 12 buyers among its top 20 institutional and mutual fund investors in the third quarter, there was widespread dissatisfaction. There was a net decline of 65.5 million shares, even as Axa purchased 21.7 million shares.

ROUND ROCK, Texas (TheStreet) -- Investor fears that Dell would suffer the same fate as Cisco were quashed after market close on Thursday when the computer maker reported solid third-quarter results.

Dell's gross margin was the highlight of the quarter, coming in at 19.2%, well above Wall Street's estimate of 17.5%, and helping to deliver a significant earnings beat. Investors were clearly breathing a big sigh of relief on Friday; the company's stock was up 54 cents, or 3.92%, to $14.20 in pre-market trading.

"We expect the stock to trade up on the gross margin recovery," explained Jayson Noland, an analyst at Robert W. Baird, in a note released on Friday. "We continue to see opportunity in Dell for value-oriented investors at current levels driven by a corporate client refresh."

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Qualcomm shares surged Wednesday after the chipmaker eased investor concerns about its chip inventory levels.

The company's shares climbed $1.88, or 4.06%, to $48.26 after Qualcomm presented a diagram at a New York City analyst event that showed an estimate for lower-than-usual inventory, reported Reuters.

On a conference call for its recent fourth-quarter results, Qualcomm warned that inventory levels would rise, raising the possibility of an overstock of chips -- something that could have an adverse impact on future results.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Commodities prices have surged, sending a shock wave through companies that rely on them, including manufacturers, apparel makers and food producers.

The commodities boom has been great for investors. (Read Can October's Best-Performing Commodities Continue Their Run?) However, commodity-dependent companies' profit margins are being squeezed, pressuring stock prices.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- As big-splash debuts go, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 launch at AT&T and T-Mobile didn't exactly make waves Monday.

Even with a glitzy media intro last month hosted by champion inside-seller and company chief Steve Ballmer, Microsoft, which spent a reported $100 million on the phone's advertising campaign, sold a mere 40,000 Windows 7 phones Monday, according to a market research source who tracks phone sales.

Updated with Sprint's plan to avoid impact from a potential Clearwire collapse.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Clearwire has failed to get its partners Sprint, Comcast, TimeWarner Cable, Intel and Google to invest more money in its network expansion bid and now says it is cutting staff, delaying new market launches and looking for alternate sources of funding.

With a 54% stake in Clearwire, Sprint shares took a 3% hit on concerns that if Clearwire goes belly up, Sprint's standing with its lenders may suffer. As a result, Sprint indicated in a federal filing Friday that it could "take certain actions, at its own discretion and control, which would eliminate the potential for Clearwire to be considered a subsidiary of Sprint."
